About Compound “AMK”

AMK (N1-acetyl-5-methoxykynuramine) is a metabolite of the pineal hormone melatonin, and may promote the formation of long-term memory, which is thought to improve memory loss and dementia associated with aging.  Development of new drugs based on AMK will improve age-related memory disorders and the early stages of dementia.

 

The Role of AMK in Memory Function

Aging is associated with a decline in AMK (N1-acetyl-5-methoxykynuramine) levels in the hippocampus, which may contribute to age-related memory impairment. Transcriptomic analysis of hippocampal tissue from aged and young mice revealed a significant downregulation of gene clusters associated with long-term memory in the aged group.

 

The Role of AMK Administration in Long-Term Memory Formation

Administration of AMK induces phosphorylation of proteins critical for memory formation in the hippocampus. A single administration of AMK either before or after learning is sufficient to enhance long-term memory in mice. Furthermore, AMK treatment improves memory formation capacity even in aged mice.
